Good news about breast cancer
If breast cancer runs in your family, there is good news for you. A University of Rochester Medical Center study has found that postmenopausal women who led healthy lifestyles reduced their risk of getting breast cancer.
It was a large study, 85,000 women and it found that by participating in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and drinking only 1 glass of alcohol a day or less lowers breast cancer risk. This is important news for women who believed that if a close relative had the disease they were destined to get the disease. |
Pollution and Diabetes
Cardiovascular and lung researchers at The Ohio State University Medical Center are the first to report a direct link between air pollution and diabetes. Researchers found that exposure to air pollution, over a period of 24 weeks, exaggerates fat inflammation and insulin resistance, which can cause diabetes. Worldwide, over 221 million people suffer from type 2 diabetes, which is a direct consequence of obesity. Additionally, both obesity and diabetes are very prevalent in urban areas; poor air quality and its impact on diabetes must now be taken into account when discussing air quality standards. |
