How far did I go?
With the cost of a GPS going down, more and more runners and bikers are able to track how far they have traveled during their workouts. If you don't own a GPS, but you are a person who loves entering data after you exercise, there is a new website that is just for you. Walkjogrun.net is a map-based website that will allow users to enter exactly where you started your walk (or run), map the route, then place your ending point. The website, which is powered by Google maps, will then calculate how far you went. You can then put in your time and see your minute per mile average.
Another great feature of this website is the ability to see routes in your area that have been created by other users. There are easy 1 mile walks, as well as 25 mile bike routes. The drawback is that depending on the area in which you are exercising, there may only be 2 or 3 routes uploaded by others. I'm sure the more publicity this website receives, the more users will upload their favorite routes.

Dear Mary,
You may notice our picture is a bit usual. The reason for the fencing theme is because my family will be heading to Dallas, Texas on the 18th of this month to attend the Junior Olympics. John Phillips,14, has qualified for the Saber competition in age 17 and under. We are quite proud of him and hope you will send us all good wishes!
Sincerely, Mary Phillips "No Sweat" Fitness

Flaxseed
While pursuing the bulk food aisle at Clark's nutrition store, on a whim I decided to buy some flaxseed. Flaxseeds are tiny, brown, seeds like sunflower seeds. They have a subtle nutty flavor. If you don't care for fish, you can add flaxseed to your diet because it also contains omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids, along with fiber, and magnesium in flaxseed make it a great addition to your diet. The flaxseeds I purchase were intact, meaning they had a protective coating which keeps the oils inside fresh. In order to get the benefits that flaxseeds offer they must be ground in a blender or grinder before use. Once ground however, they must be stored in an airtight container and kept in the refrigerator to keep it from turning rancid.
Now that it is ground, how can I use it? Flaxseed can be added to smoothies, muffin mix, pancakes, and waffles to increase the "bulk." It can also be sprinkled on yogurt, cottage cheese, or any cereal. |
