Dear Mary,
The weather is beautiful and calling to us to come outside. April is National Gardening Month so let's celebrate! |
Wildflowers in bloom
California is alive with blossoms! The deserts of the Golden State are literally bursting with color and begging to be enjoyed. These bright yellow flowers you see pictured here are the Dune Sunflower. These hardy wildflowers are joined by Lantana and Booth's Primrose. The cacti are also beginning to join in the show with Prickly Pear Cactus and Ocotillo in full bloom. Below you'll find information about the best places to view wildflowers in California.
Joshua Tree National Park-Southern California
This park is always open and there are 9 campgrounds available with tables, fire grates, and toilets. If you just want to visit for a day hike, there are several picnic areas available. The bad news is you must bring your own water (bring more than you think you might use) and firewood. Go before June or after September to avoid the scorching desert heat.
Sequoia & Kings Canyon-Northern California
Fourteen campgrounds are set among the beautiful sequoia trees in this jewel of a national park. Abundant wildflowers and rushing rivers are just some of the things you will see hiking through the canyons. With both easy and very strenuous trails there is something for everyone in the family.
Death Valley National Park-Southern California
Ranger guided tours will enhance your experience at this national park. Make sure you check the "wildflower report" on the national park website to find the best times to see the blooms.

| Gardening & Exercise
The best way to add beauty to your environment while adding exercise to your life is by gardening. A 150 pound person will burn about 190 calories an hour by raking, planting or weeding a garden. But just like any exercse it is important you follow a few steps to keep yourself healthy.
1. Warm-up
Before you start, take a brisk walk around the block to get your muscles warmed-up and ready for work.
2. Stretch
Do some gentle stretching for your neck, back, shoulders, legs, and each arm.
3. Take breaks
Work at a steady pace and don't forget to take an occasional break. During each break, again do the stretches for each body area you stretched earlier.
